Legend: Many scriptural notes mention about this temple. This temple was constructed in Tredha-yuga. The Pandava brothers during their exile period were traveling in south India. At that time they came to Thiruvakodu and set up a hermitage to stay for some time. Also They built a temple and installed idols for their daily worship.
Arjuna installed Lord Vishnu's idol in the middle of this place. Then Dharuma, Beema, Nakula and Sahadeva installed Brahma, Rudra and Asvini devas respectively in each of the four directions. They lived in this place (Thiru-vithuvakodu) for a long time until the end of their exile. Later this temple was renovated by Pandiya kings. They constructed the perimeter walls around the temple. Only the idols of the four devas were there for a long time. As in some Vaishnavaite temples a siva lingam also came to be installed here.

About two thousand years ago a sage from the south went to Kasi Kshetram and settled there itself. Once the sage's mother was very ill and he came back south to visit her. It is said that kasi Viswanatha himself hid in the sage's umbrella and travelled with the sage. On his visit to this temple he was going to have a bath in River Neela. He kept his umbrella on the ' Bali peet' in front of the sanctum. All of a sudden the bali-peetam burst into four pieces and a Siva-lingam. came out of the spot. It is said Sri Visveswara of Kasi himself incarnated here to be with the four moorthys already installed there. Later the devotees of Siva constructed a separate temple for Sri Visveswara-Lingam. Henceforth this place came to be called Pancha moorthy Sthalam.
