Legend :
When Brahma was busy in his task of creations two demons appeared before him and wanted to seize the four vedha - Rig, Yajur, Sama and Adharvana. These four vedhas are the basic scripture of Hinduism.Brahma fought with the two demons to rescue the holy Vedhas but he was over-powered. They grabed the vedas and hid them deep under the sea. Brahma went to Vaikundam for help . But Vishnu was not there. The dwarapalakas - the sentries at the entrance to Vaikuntam told Brahma that Vishnu was in Thiru-Kanna-Mangai in boologam (earth). Brahma came to the earth and went to Thiru-Kanna-Mangai. He sat on the banks of the holy tank Dharsha-Pushkarini and began his penance to Lord Vishnu. Vishnu appeared before Brahma and asked him for his wish. Brahma told him about the two demons and the vedhas. Vishnu again incarnated as a boar and went deep into the sea. He fought with the two demons and rescued the vedhas. Brahma gladly accepted them and asked a boon from Vishnu that he should always be with Vishnu in that kshetram. Vishnu granted him the boon. Brahma built a four-pillar mantapam in the temple near the sanctum and installed the four vedhas in the pillars. It is named Sri mandapam. Another wonder here is that there is a big hive with lots of bees located at the entrance to the Devi's Sanctum. It is said that all the gods from the heavens attended the Vishnu and Lakshmi's wedding and stayed behind here as bees to have the darshan of Vishnu and Lakshmi every day for ever. There is an inscription to this effect in the temple. |
