Legend:
Many centuarys ago this place was called Thataaga-Vanam
There was a bramin named Vedha-saran livng here with his wife Kumudhavalli.
They had no children. They prayed to Lord Vishnu for a child. By God's grace
after many years they got a baby girl and named her as Kamalavathi. The baby grew up
to be an young maiden.
Vedha saran wished to perform her Marraige. But the girl did not want to marry any human being.
She wanted to marry only Lord Vishnu. The brahmin advised her against the idea in many ways
but she did not listen to her father.
She went to a forest and did penance for many years invoking Sri Vishnu. The Lord appeared
before her and asked her the purpose of her penance to him. Kamalavathi expressed her wish
to marry the lord and again went into deep penance. Happy with her devotion the Lord
hugged her putting his ' Kowsthuba Haram' on her and accepted her on his chest.
The Brahmin Vedha saran was very happy that the Lord had become his son-in-law. He was worshiping the lord as usual. In the mean time The brahmin's wife Kumudha valli went to a river to bathe. At that time a demon called Asmasran kidnapped her and hid her in a cave in the Himalayas. Vedha Saran was very sad. On a full-moon day he anointed the lord with milk and "Pancha-Amirdham" and represented his sad story to Lord Vishnu. Immediately the Lord went on his mount Garuda to the Himalayas and rescued Kumudha valli. The demon came to know about the rescue and ran to Palika vanam and fought with the Lord. God became very angry. He caught the demon and punched him. The demon fell down on the ground. Lord Vishnu danced on the body of the demon. Henceforth the deity is called Sora-Nattiyan - Maya-Koothan in tamil language.
