Once river Kaveri lost all her charm because devotees took bath and washed their sins in the holi river. She went to Brahma and asked for his advice on her problem. Brahma told Kavery to go to Koodaloor and pray to Vishnu. She rushed to Koodaloor to pray to Vishnu. As soon as River Kavery flowed into the sanctum and fell on vishnu idol she became bright and beautiful. But she washed away every thing in the sanctum including the idols of Vishnu and Lakshmi. A fisher man found the Vishnu and Lakshmi idols. He took them to his home and kept them in a clean and safe place. In the mean time Vishnu appeared in Madurai Queen Mangamma's dream and ordered her to build a temple for himself. He told her that the place where they were lodged. Next day the queen informed her minister about her dream and ordered him to make her travel arrangements to the place where the idols were kept.
The queen of Madurai went to the fishermens place. They were all happy that the queen visited their colony. The head of the fisher men told the story of the river Kavery flooding the temple in Koodaloor and about the idols floating downstream getting stuck in the sand near their area. The queen saw the idols and prayed to the god and goddess.
When the queen was pondering as to where to construct the temple that Vishnu had ordered in her dream she heard an oracle that told her to build the temple at its present location. She was very happy and constructed the temple accordingly and installed the idols with a grand ceremony endowing the temple with much wealth for its maintanence.
The temple is on an extensive 5 acre land with big mandapas, five stage towers and two corridors enclosed in high walls. The temple structures are marvellous. This temple is bigger than the Srirangam Ranganadhar temple.
