Legend: Once the seven sages (Saptha rishis) did penance to sri vishnu in a village (the present name is asramam) near sucheentharam. Lord gave them dharshan as Siva. So they worshipped Siva. Later they went a place was called somatheertham and they again did panance to Sri Hari for a very long time to have his dharshan as Sri Vishnu. The Lord appeared before them and they expressed their wish that he should be here for ever. The Lord agreed. He created an universal place in the sky and made them as stars (Nakshatrams) in a constellation. They are shining in the sky even now as "saptharishi Mandalam".
Another legend is that once Sri Vishnu after destroying Hiranyakasibu was very angry and stomping around roaring like a lion. Baktha Prahalatha prayed to goddess Lakshmi. She came and Sri vishnu at her sight became cool. He took Lakshmi on his chest. So he is namaed Thiru-Valzh- Marban. In Tamil Thiru means Sri, Valzh is live and Marbu is chest. The meaning of this in Tamil language is that the deity here is holding his consort Lakshmi on his chest. There is no separate sanctum for the Devi in this temple.
