Legend:
There was a controversy among the trinity of gods whether yagas can be done with out the
participation of the performer's wife.
Brahma did an yaga with out his consort Saraswathi. Offended the Devi caused
many interruption to the yaga. But she was defeated in her prupose. In anger she blocked the sun
with her hand and the world became dark.
Brahma prayed to Lord Vishnu who became a jyothi and gave brightness to the world. Saraswathi could not stand this and created lot of demons particularly a cruel and ferocious one named Maya Nalan. She sent him as fire and ordered him to swallow the fire in the yaga pit. Accordingly the demon Maya-nalan came to the venue of yaga as agni (fire) to swallow the fire. Sri vishnu saw the demon, changed him into a deepa jyothi and held the jyothi in his hand to give more illumination to the yaga. Because of this incident the deity here is called Deepa Pragaser. Later Sri Vishnu went to Saraswathi and consoled her. Saraswathi calmed down and she became an important ' theertham' ( spring ) in this temple. This is the reason why the theertham is called Saraswathi Pushkarini.
