Legend: Some scriptural notes say that this place was linked with Andhra and related to memorable events of vijayanagara empire. Historically this place was governed by the Pallava kings. In Bagavatha puranam this is connected with sage pundareega.
The legend goes that once sage Pundareega to worship Lord Ksheerabthi-Nadhan was taking a basket full of lotus flowers and going in the eastern direction. But the sea was blocking his way. The sage was worried and unconsciously he was bailing out the water with his two palms.

But the water level still remained the same. The sage was crying for Lords mercy. After for some time Sri Vishnu appeared before the sage as an old man and told him he was hungry. The sage asked the old man to take care of the basket of flowers and went bring some food for the old man. Before the sage brought food the Lord was lying on Aadhi Shesha on the sea and wearing all the flowers as a garland. Sage saw this while he was coming with the food He was amazed and was very glad.He ran to the lord and asked him with tears in his eyes that he should be always be with him.
The lord accepted and the sage sat near the lord in this place.
