When Hiranyakasibu hit the pillar the God came out as Narasimha (Half man and half loin) and killed him. When Lord Narasimha came out of the palace all the demons ran and hid themselves. The Lord thought that was the place to take abode in and sat there as yoga-moorthy Hence he is called Kamashika Narasimah and the place is called ' Velukai ' (' Vel ' in Tamil Language means wish )
