Legend:
King Bali was ruling over this place with dignity. Once three atrocious demons came to the king for help to fight with devas. But king Bali refused to join with them. Hence they themselves fought with devas for a long time but they were defeated in the war. Again a second time they asked the king for help. This time he did not refuse and accepted to help them and also won the war. But he killed lot of devas. So to wash the sins he came to Thiru-vidandai and did deep penance for years together to Sri Vishnu. The Lord appeared before the king as Sri Varaha Moorthy. Sri Varahar asked the king the purpose of his penance. The king was happy and surrendered to the lord. He asked for a place in the heaven and requsted Mahavishnu to stay for ever in Thiru-vidandhai. God agreed to incarnate in this place and granted liberation to the king.
