Legend:
There was a wise lady living in a village called Sangara-mangalam.
She used to perform the Ekadesi virtham regularly and on the next day she would invite
an unmarried person and offer food to him and then only she would have food herself.
But constantly she faced interruptions from a demon called Tholagasuran. The wise lady
could not stand his botheration. Hence she prayed to Vishnu to kill the cruel demon.
To solve the problem Lord Vishnu incarnated as an unmarried young man and came
to have food the day after Ekadasi. The demon came as usual to trouble the lady and
the lord killed him with his disc.
The skull from his dismembered body fell in the place is called Thaliyar,
his hands fell in the place is called Muttaru and his legs fell in the place is called Kallaru.
The lady came as usual to the temple for feeding an young man. She saw a person hiding his chest with his hands and she guessed rightly that he was the lord himself. She prayed to the Lord to show her "Sri" on his chest. Vishnu appeared before the lady with Sri Lakshmi on his chest. She was very happy and requested the lord to incarnate in this place as Thiru vazhl maarban. God accepted and took abode here and granted liberation to the wise lady and she attained moksham. Hence this place is called Thiru-vallaval.
