Special merits of this temple:
The Bramanda Purana says once there was a battle between devas and the asuras.
Ausuras were defeated by Indira. But they went on to fight with Varuna. Unfortunately
Varuna was defeated by the Asuras and he lost his weapon called Pasam and he lost
his kingdom also . He was very sad and went to his Guru to find out a way to get them
back.
His guru told Varuna "Long time ago you insulted me. Hence you have lost your
weapon and your kingdom. But I have now forgiven you. I will tell you the way out of
your problem. Go to Thiruperai and do penance to Sri Mahara-Booshanar".
Varuna did his pranams to Guru and went to Thiruparai to do penance to Sri Mahara-Booshanar
(Sri Vishnu) according to his Guru's advice for long years.
Mahara-booshaner appeard before Varuna and the Lord sprinkled holy water on the floor as well as on Varuna. The Rain God regained his weapon that he had lost ( pasam) as well as his kingdom. Even now there is a belief that Varuna bagwan visits this temple in March on the full moon day to worship the lord.
