Legend:
Long ago there was a King called Dundhu-maran who ruled over a small island. He had a son and his name was Swedhan. One day the king asked the palace astrologer to scan his son's horoscope. The prediction was not good. The astrologer said that Swedhan would have a short life and his end might come in water. The king Dundhumaran was very sad and went to his palace. To find a way out of this danger Vasishta the chief priest told the king that he should go to vellaikulam along with the prince and make him learn the 'Mrutyunjaya' japam from a teacher. The prince should do the japam sitting under a bilva tree for 45 days. Accordingly the king came to thiruvellakulam along with his son swedha. He found a teacher and requested the teacher to teach the 'Maha Mrutyanjaya jabam' to his son. The prince learnt the jabam and sat under the bilva tree and chanted the mantra for 45 days. 'Maha Mruthyunjaya jabam' is a hymn to propitiate Lord siva. But when the young prince chanted this mantra it was Vishnu who appeared before him and blessed him with long life. This would clearly show the unity of Vaishnavism and shaivaism at the highest level.
