Legend:

Many centuries ago Sage Mahachanda did penance to Sri Vishnu. Indira was interrupting the sage's penance. ( It is said that if any one did prayer, Yaga, Yagna, or penance Indira would persume fearfully that his own position would be undermined his kingdom might be captured. In this way Indira earned the enmity of all saints and sages) Indira sent lot of elephants to distrub the sage's penance The sage was distracted from his divine penance by the elephants and sage changed into an elephant. Years passed the elephant sage was romantically roaming around the forests. One day the elephant went to Salagramam and took bath in the holy river. Then he got his memory back and the elephant sage went aloof. He was very annoyed with himself and prayed to the Lord .The elephant did pooja with nearly 14,000 flowers to Sri Narayana.
One day the elephant sage went to the middle of a tank to pluck Lilly flowers for its pooja but a crocodile caught hold of its leg. The elephant cried calling Narayana for help. Narayana appeared before him and killed the crocodile with his disc. The sage elephant prayed for liberation. Narayana granted the wish. Henceforth the deity here is called Gajendira Varadhan
