It is said the Sri Mahalakshmi and Gajendharan used to pluck lotus flowers together in a pond for Sri Maha-Vishnu pooja. One day all the flowers were plucked by Sri Lakshmi. Gajendran did not have any flowers to pluck. He was very sad and could not do the pooja.
So Lord Maha-vishnu sought help from Sri Lakshmi. He told her not to pluck the flowers. When Gajendran saw the tank there were lot of flowers. He was very happy. He worshipped Lord Vishnu and did Pooja with the lotus flowers.
Lord Vishnu gladly accepted Sri Lakshmi's and Gajendran's pooja. The Lord appeared before them and granted boons as they wished. Gajendra asked the Lord humbly to incarnate here for ever. God agreed. Sri Lakshmi and Gajendran together did pooja to Lord Vishnu here. Henceforth Sri Lakshmi was called Gaja-lakshmi.
