Long ago Janaka Maharishi wished to do a big Yaga on the banks of the Kadhamba-threertam. The maharishi was performing the yagam elaborately but the (avirbakam) the offerings was eaten by a dog. The Rajarishi was very sad and he consulted his palace priests. They advised the king that he should do pooja to the Kadhamba tree at Uthamanoor. Janaka Maharishi did the pooja to the Kadambatree for many years according to his palace priests' advice. Vishnu very happily appeared before the king reclining on Aadhisaha with Brahma rising up from his umbilical chord and siva beside him.The trinity of gods appeared before Janakarishi in this place. Later the Monarch Janaka maharishi built the temple here and endowed it with lot of wealth. Every year Lord Siva together with Vishnu is taken in procession on Karteeka day. This is symbolic of the unity of the sects of the religion and of the human beings.
