Devotional song sung on the deity by Thirumangai alzhwar
Legend:
Once Lord Siva and Parvathi performed the cosmic dance. When their dance was over they asked for the opinion of Muruga and Ganapathi about their dance. The Ganapathi brothers and other Ganas expressed their view that Mother Goddess danced better in this universe. Lord Siva told them that they were young boys so they did not know much about this dance.Hence Siva called Brahma the creater and told him the story about their dance performence. The creator told siva to go to ' Thiruvalangadu' . He would come there see the performence and give his opinion. Accordingly the God and Goddess went to Thiruvalangadu. The creator Brahma was the judge for the performence. Siva and Parvathi executed the dance performance before Brahma. But Brahma could not judge correctly. So the creator said that vishnu was the person who could deliver the correct judgement.
Hence Lord Siva asked Sri Vishnu to see their cosmic dance. Sri Vishnu agreed and asked them to come over to Thillai which is Chidambaram. Vishnu arranged with Vishvakarma and Mayan that five elements be made five kalasas, the four vedas as four towers, 36 Smiturhi Sutras as 36 enterences, 5 egyams to become 5 walls and six doors. 3 viyakruthas became 3 stages and more than 100 yaga yugasthambams as 100 pillars to the mandap. Chitrakoot contains 5 sabas - Kanakasaba, Ratinasaba, Nagasaba Deva saba and Rajasaba cunstructed for Lord Siva-Sakthi's dance performance.
The cosmic dance Started. The performence by Rudra was very aggressive. Goddess parvathi changed as Devi Kali and danced very well. Vishnu was enjoying the dance performence. When Lord Siva was about to be defeated by Parvathy Vishnu droped his earrings and lifted it with his toes upto his ears and thus gave a hint to Siva to dance similarly lifting his leg up. Lord siva saw this and he lifted his legs up up to his head. But Parvathi could not match this. She felt ashamed and went to reside outside the town as a guardian deity.
Sri Vishnu proclimed lord as the winner of the contest. So from that time he is called Nataraja. Lord Siva asked Sri Vishnu should stay for ever in that place. Sri Vishnu agreed and resided in Chitrakoodam in Chidambaram
