There is a belief that once in 12 years all the holy rivers Ganges, Saraswathi, Godhavari, Yamuna, Krishna, Sindu, and Sarayu confluence here. This occasion is called Maha-Magam.
This temple's chariot is the biggest one among all the other temples. This chariot was dedicated by Thiru-Mangai-Alwar. This chariot's workmanship is an artistic marvel. Thirumangai Alwar composed a song called Rada-Bandham
Thiru-Mazhisai alwar sang about the deity as follows: "You are very tired because of walking to Lanka or because you held the whole universe on your snout in the incarnation as Varaha (Boar). So speak in lying pose just lifting your head (not bother to get up)." The lord did as he was told.
The deity is in the lying pose and just lifting the head.
This temple was renovatated by Krishnadevaraya in 17-18th centuary.
When moguls came to invade this temple, one Naivasal Udaiyar saved this temple. Hence this family is given the place of honour in this temple on a hereditary basis.
The Sthala-puranam says that once at the end of thretha yuga Brahma hid all the vedhas in a pitcher which floated down the river and by the end of the yuga and it landed at this place. Requested by all devas Lord Siva incarnated as a hunter and shot an arrowed on the mouth of the pitcher. Water flowed from the pitcher in two streams. One is the Mahamaga tank and the other is the golden-lotus tank. Hence this place is called Kumbakonam. (Thiru-Kudandai)

Legend:
In Rama Avathar after his Pattabishegam (coronation) when Sri Rama sent Vibishana off to his country Lanka. Rama gave his pooja idols to Vibishana for his worship with Vakruthi (pranava-kruthi) and Vaideega towers. Happily Vibishana accepted these and when he was crossing the river Kollidam and Cauvery the deities slipped out of his hands and fell on the ground. Vibishana was very sad and he prayed to god.He heard an oracle voice that said the Lord was going to be lying down there in Sri Rangam with Pranavakruthi vimanam. Hence he could come to srirangam once in a year and his darshan.
At the same that he went to Kudandai holding a bow and arrows and married Komala- valli, sage Brugu's daughter and is installed under the Vaideega tower.
