Legend:
This kshetram is described in Garuda-purana in which this place is called Bilva-Aranyam and related to Thirumangai alzhwar's biography. This is one of the Pancha Narasimha moorthy kshetrams. It is also called Aalingana-puram, Sripuri. Once Brahma's son Kardhama-Prajapathy was on a deep penance. But Sri Vishnu delayed to appear before him .Devi ( The consort of Vishnu) did not like this. So Devi requested Vishnu that he should not test him critically. But Vishnu did not heed to devi's advise. Therefore she was upset and came to Thirunagari. She saw a pond full of lotus flowers and hid herself in one of the flowers.
Vishnu could not live without his consort Lakshmi and he too came to Thiru-nagari and was searching for her. Vishnu happened to see a lotus pond in which all the petals of the flowers were closed. Because Sri Vishnu's two eyes are Sun and moon. Vishnu played a trick. When he closed his right eye the sun disappeared and the moon arose. Normally once the moon rises all the lotus petals open. But now one lotus petals was still closed. Sri Vishnu perceived that devi was in that lotus and he ran and embraced her. This place is named Aalinganapuri after this incident.
Kardhama Brajapathi who was still in penance used this opportunity and asked for his liberation. But Sri Vishnu said he would not get liberation then but only in Kaliyuga.Kardhama prajabathi requested Vishnu and Lakshmi that they should take abode here for ever. Accordingly they incarnated in Thiru Nagari.
