Important Event :
This is the place where Sukrachariar the guru of demons regained his eye-sight after long years of penance to Vishnu. Earlier Vamana (the dwarf) to destroy Mahabali asked the demon for as much land as his three steps would cover. Mahabali was about to pour water into Vamana's hand in token of acceding to his request. Knowing that the dwarf's three steps would cover the whole universe Sukrachariar took the form of a bee and sat in the snout of the kettle to block the water that Mahabali was pouring into Vishnu's hands. Vishnu perceiving this took a thorn and poked into the snout which pricked the asura guru's eye and blinded him.
Why this temple's deity is called Kolavilli Raman? Here is the Legend :
Once there was an argument between Viswakarma (deva's architect cum Builder) and Mayan (the demons' architect.) Viswakarma proudly told about his construction of many abodes for vishnu from 108 Thirupathis including Vaikunda-Nadhan's temple in Vaikundam. Mayan was very sad. Brhama interrupted this arguement between Mayan and Vishvakarma and told Vishvakarma that he should not be proud about his constructions for Vishnu. Vishvakarma's last birth was as an ardent devootee of Sri Vishnu. Hence in this birth he was a great builder of sri Vishnu temples. This was only because of Lord Vishnu's blessings. thought made him great.Vishvakarma felt ashamed.
Brahma asked Mayan to go to the earth and selact the place where it was calm with divine presence and do penence to Sri Vishnu. Accordingly Mayan came to earth and he found the place on the banks of Cauveri river in the northern part of Baskara-kshetram now called Thiru-valliyan-kudi.. There was a sage in deep penance. Hence he thought that was the best place for his purpose and he sat near the sage and began his panance to Sri vishnu. Many years passed. At last Bagavan Sri Vishnu appeared before him as Vaikundathipathi. Vishnu asked Mayan what was the purpose of his penance. Mayan told the lord that he was very happy that the Lord appeared before him and requested that Sri Vishnu should take form as Rama and give him dharshan. Immdiately Vishnu handed over his disc and Conch to his mount Garuda and incarnated as Sri Rama again with bow and arrow before Mayan in this place. Mayan was very happy. He constructed an abode like Vaikundam just like what Visvakarma constructed for Sri Vishnu. Mayan requested that Vishnu should take abode here in Thiru-valliyan-kudi and bestow all the boons to his devotees as he would from Vaikundam. Vishnu granted the boon as Mayan whished and stayed here itself and was named Sri Kola Vill Raman in that temple that Mayan constructed.
'Kolam' in Tamil is Incarnation, 'Vill' is Bow. Raman is the name of the deity as Vishnu took the form of Rama for the sake of Mayan.
