        Legend:
Once Krishna and Balarama went to a forest for hunting and returned home after more than a month. They saw arrangements had been made for a grand yaga with beautiful decorations. All the people of Gokulam were very busy.
Krishna asked his mother Yasodha what the occasion was for all the grand decorations. Yasodha told krishna that "they were performing an yaga for Indra because he gives rain and prosperity.Hence our village is preparing for a yaga to the King of clouds -Indran." Krishna got upset and told his mother. " dear Mother we are cowherds and our prayers should be only to our cattle and the mountain." He diverted the peoples' mind from doing the yaga to Indra and took them to do pooja to the Govardhana Mountain. Indra got very angry at Krishna and he wanted to teach him a lesson. So Indra ordered a cloud called 'samvarthan' to rain heavly on the place where the people did the pooja. . Indra himself went there to see the scene. People were suffering because of the heavy rain. Indra was very happy. He sent more and more clouds and it was pouring torrentially. The people could not stand the onslaught.
Krishna saw the atrocious act by Indra and got very angry. Sri Krishna told the people of Gokulam "My friends do not worry about this kind of fake act. I will lift this Govardhana mountain and you all come under it". As Sri Krishna told them he lifted the montain and held it with his small finger like an umbrella. The entire people of Gokulam including cattle went under the mountain for protection.
Indra was defeated. Then the rain stopped and sun rose. All the people were happy and returned to their homes. Krishna put down the mountain. He went up and sat on the top of the mountain. Soon Indra came to Krishna and apologized. Indra told Sri Krishna " I did not know that you are an incarnation of Sri Vishnu. Pray, pardon me". Sri krishna magnanimously pardoned Indira. Then Indra brought milk from Go-Lokam and anointed Sri Krishna. Krishna cooled down and was happy with prayers of Indra.
Because Sri Maha Vishnu as Lord Krishna lifted the Govanrdhana giri mountain to provide shelter to the people of Gokulam and danced with them he is known here as Kudamadu-koothan
