Bramanda purana says that saraswathi caused many interruptions to Brahma's Asvametha yaga. Lastly she came as flood water threatening the venue of Yaga. As the flow was very fast she came to be known as 'Vegavathi' ( 'vegam' in Tamil means fast)
Brahma was worried and prayed to Vishnu. The Lord came down and blocked the flood by lying accross the flow of water like a dam in his lying posture. When Vishnu lay accross the flood water Saraswathi controlled herself and the flow subsided Brahma continued and successfully completed his yaga. Then Sri Narayana gave darshan to Brahma with his consort Sri Lakshmi. . After many changes in the name of the place over a period of time this place came to be known as "Vehkka".
