Legend:
Once an young boy Madyanthanar told his father "you have taught me all vedas, sastras and about religious duities. But I wish to have God's darshan. Please tell me the way." Madyanthanar's father said " dear son if that is your wish go to Chola-desa Thirusthalam and do pooja daily to whichever god is there and soon you will fulfill your desires". According to his father's advice Madyanthanar came to Puliyur in Nagapattinam. He saw a Siva temple and began to worship there. He had a problem. He could not pluck all the flowers from the tall plant. Because of this he was very sad and prayed to God. He heard a divine voice that he will have legs like a tiger and the paws will have glittering eyes. He was very happy that he could climb on trees and pluck the flowers even in the dark. He was delightfully worshiping god. From then on he would be called viyakrapadhan ( Viyakram means tiger ). Madyanthanar became Viyakrama-Padhar.
Years passed Viyakrapadhar became old and he did panance rigorously. Finaly Lord Siva appeared before him and asked Viyakrapadhar about his wish. Viyakrapadhar said he wanted Moksham. Lord siva told viyakrapadhar to go to Salasayanam and Vishnu there would give him moksham. Sage Viyakrapadhar went to Salasayanam (Siru-puliyur) to have Vishnu's darshan. He arrived at the temple and went to the sanctum to have the god's Darshan. The diety was huge in size and frightening. So He prayed to god vishnu to reduce in size so that he could touch the Idol. Bagavan Sri Vishnu became a baby. Viyakrapadhar happily touched and hugged the baby-lord.Viyakrapadhar prayed to Lord to attain moksham.Sri Vishnu granted his wish and Viyakrapadhar achieved libration through god realization.
