Legends say that this temple has been a sacred place in all the four yugas. 
1.In Kredhayuga Kridha varman brama's son whished to worship Sri Vishnu in ' Archa roopam.' So he ordered Viswakarma (The builder for devas) to build a temple here. The devas' builder constructed the temple with ' Ashtanga Vimanam' in the middle of river Kruthamala. The lord with Lakshmi incarnated on his mount Garuda in the sanctum of this temple.
2. In Tredhayuga king Biruthu was on his pilgrimage.But his arial chariot could not fly over this Vimanam. Hence he came down and stayed for a long time here and worshipped the lord. At last he attained moksham here.

3. In dwaparayuga a devotee of sri Vishnu called Ambareeshan did penance for a long time in this temple.The Lord appeared before him and granted Ambareeshan moksham.

4. In the beginning of Kaliyuga Emperor Purooruvan worshipped Lord Koodal-azhagar and endowed this temple with much wealth and attained moksham. Then his son emperor Indiratyumanan followed his father and prayed to the lord attained moksham here. The son of Emperor Indiratyumanan was Malayatwaja Pandiyan the father of Sri Devi Meenakshi He defeated all the king of the north India and planted his flag with fish symbol on the Himalayas.
