Legend:

Once there was a debate among the trinity of gods that a yaga or yagna cannotbe performed without the participation of their consorts (The devis). Brahma challenged that he would perform an yagna with out his consort saraswathi.
Brahma began an Yagna for the welfare of the world. His consort Saraswathi was very angry and she interrupted the yagna. Saraswathi tried to stop the yagna in various ways but all her efforts were in vain. So she incarnated as the fastest river Vegavathi and flooded the venue of the yagna. Sri vishnu lay down as a dam and stopped the flood coming in.
Then Sri Vishnu changed into a flame and with that Brahma started yagna again without his consort. In mean time all the other gods helped brahma and he completed his yagna without any interruption. Sri Vishnu appeared in the yagna-pit in a ' Vimanam ' and accepted the Aavirbagam (offerings). Then the Lord granted boons to all his devotees and took abode in Thiru-Kacchi. This deity has been worshipped in four yugas. The details are as follows:

  • Brahma in Kridha yuga
  •   Gajendiran in Tredhayuga
  •   Brahaspathy in Dwaparayuga and
  • Anandhan in Kaliyuga.
Because Brahma worshiped this deity in this place ( Ka Means Brahma anjiram means worshiping) so it was called Kanjiram but in due course the name has changed as Kanjipuram.
