Legend:
Markandeya purana says in Kredha-yuga there was a Brahmin couple who were childless. They performed Sali yagna in Badri Kshetram to be blessed with children. (Sali means Paddy in Sanskrit). At the end of the yagna Sri Maha-Vishnu appeared before the couple. Sri Vishnu asked them the purpose of their yagna. The couple told the lord that they should be blessed with children. Sri Vishnu happily granted the boon that they would have a male child and he would be a great personality to be named Sali-hotran ( because they performed the yagna with paddy) and Sri Vishnu disappeared.
Accordingly the couple had a male child and named him Salihotran. Years passed the child became an young man. Salihothran became a devotee of Sri Vishnu. After finishing Gurukulam he went on a Kshetra-danam. On his travels Salihotran came to Veet-kharanyam. (This place was called Veetkharanyam. Later this name was changed as Thiruvalloor). He met lot of sages. He followed the advice of the sages and got involved in all their religious duties. Once when he finished a course of 'virtham' he was waiting for a guest to feed. This would mark the end of his virtham
Lord Vishnu was very happy about the long "virtham" that Salihotran had observed and he appeared as an old man to have food and Salihotran served enough food. But the old man ate all that and wanted more. Salihotran gave his portion of food to him.The old man finished this also and wanted a place to rest. Salihotrar showed his hermitage and the old man went in. There the old man incarnated as Veeraragavar in lying pose. Salihotran's hermitage became the Viyajakoti Vimanam . The lord blessed Salihotrar. The sage requested the Lord to incarnate in that place for ever.
As the Lord himself asked for space to lie down this place came to be known as "Kingiruham" and the deity's name is Kingiruhan.
