Bramanda purana and other scriptural notes say that this place was called 'Kandavanam' and the hill was named 'Dhoyatri'. They also say these deities are "Swayam Vyaktha Moorthy" meaning all these deities are self incarnated. When the sage Thiru Mangai alzhwar visited this shrine it was sorrounded by water. Hence the name "Thiru-neer-malai was given to it. ( "neer" means water in tamil.)
It is said this is one among the 8 moksha-sthalams. The other seven are

  • SriRangam,
  • Sri Mushnam
  • Thirupathi,
  • Saligramam, ;
  • Naimicharinyam
  • Pushkaram
  • Narayana-puram
The legend holds that a demon called Vanasuran who had 1000 hands, imprisoned prince Aniruddhan. Lord krishna went to the help of the prince. But vanasuran and his soldiers gave a stiff fight to Krishna. The lord annihilated all the soldiers and was in the process of cutting off all the hands of Vanasura and kill him .
The demon was an ardent devotee of Lord Siva and ardently prayed to the Lord. Heading to the prayers Siva pleaded with Krishna to spare the life of the demon. Accordingly Krishna desisted from killing the Asura and also spared his 4 hands.
Vanasura became ashamed of himself for fighting with the Lord almighty. Like four "Vedas" his four hands were raised in obeisance. Like the water body protecting the boundaries of the hill temple he prayed Lord Krishna should surround him with his benign protection.
