Legend: Kanchi Purana says that Brahma was performing an yaga without his consort Saraswathi. Offended the Devi caused many interruptions to the yaga. She created cruel and ferocious demons and sent them in groups to the venue of yaga. Brahma noticed this and prayed to Vishnu who killed all the demons and appeared before Brahma with blood stained body. Brahma saw Vishnu's appearance and called him as Pralavesa.
Henceforth the deity here is called Pravalechar ( in Tamil language Pavalam means coral. The lord in blood stained appearance was crimson in colour like coral.)
