Monarch Sibi was ruling Ayodhi. Once the king came to Thiru-vellarai for a temporary period with his army to take rest. The monarch saw a white boar (Swedha-Varaham) and he chased the boar. But it hid into an anthill and disappeared. The king was searching for it but he could not find it. When he was looking around the place he saw a sage who was in deep penance. The king went near the sage. But the sage was in deep meditation with closed eyes. The king waited until the sage woke up and told the sage about the boar. The sage told the king that he should arrange for a pitcher of milk and do abishegam to the anthill.
Accordingly the monarch arranged for milk as the sage told and did abishegam.Lord Vishnu appeared before them once the abishegam was over. The sage and king were happy to see the God and they requested Lord Vishnu that he should stay in Thiru-vellarai for ever. The Lord agreed and stayed here for ever. Later the morach Sibi built a temple and installed the deities. There is place was not populated at all. So the king went to so many places and brought nearly 4000 people to establish a city and endowed the temple with lot of wealth.
