Legend: Once emperor Sibi's son Virusha-Dhabi was ruling over this country. He was suffering from a serious disease and he could not attend to his duties. Because of this the whole of the country was facing diificulties and in poverty.
Unexpectedly Saptha Rishis visited the kingdom. They met the king and they saw the monarch was very ill. The king told the Rishis that if they performed some homam to help him escape from his bad period and get well then he would offer charities to them. On hearing this the rishis were very angry with the king and they decided that they would not give any kind of help to him. They all left the place in great anger. However though the king said all these to the rishis he sent gold, money, and some fruits to them as if they were given by his minister. The sages refused to accept the gifts. The king was very angry with the sages and he himself performed a vamachara yaga and a demon came out from the yaga-pit.
The king ordered the demon to kill the sages. The sages came to know about this through their occult vision and they prayed to Vishnu. The Lord sent Indira as a tiger to destroy the demon and Indira came and ate the demon. Hence forth this place is called Thiru-Puliyur ('puli' in tamil means tiger).
All Rishis did penance to Sri Vishnu for a long time and He appeared before them as a shadow and granted them liberation. The seven rishis attained moksham in this place. They remain as a constellation of seven stars in the skies even now in the north pole.
The deity here is called Mayabiran.
