Legend :
This temple has two carridors one within the other enclosed by high walls and there are two mandapams. Length wise It is 225 feet and 120 feet wide. The tower is big in size in three stages and is like a lotus. If one goes to this temple and worships offering a lotus to Lord Vishnu and consort Lakshmi they fullfil all the wishes of the devotees. This place is called Kamala-kshetram also called Thiru-moorthy kshetram because Brahma, Vishnu and Siva have temples here Once Parvathi was in deep meditation praying to Brahma. Siva was very angry with Parvathi for praying to Brahma instead of to himself. He was angry with Brahma also and he plucked off one of Brahma's heads. (Brahma had five headsoriginally.) Brahma cursed Siva that the head would not fall off from Siva's hands. Accordingly the head got stuck to siva's fingers. Even though Lord siva was one of the trinity of Gods he had committed a sin in plucking off one of Brahma's heads
Strangely Brahma's head felt an insatiabe hunger. Siva realised that he would wash off his sin only when the head stuck to his finger felt relieved from hunger. But this was not happening. Lord Siva was distraught and atlast he came to Uthamanoor.
. Vishnu saw Siva with a Brahma kapalam ( Brahma's head) in his fingers. He felt very sorry for siva and he looked at his consort devi. Mahalakshmi understood Vishnu's mind and poured food into the 'Brahma Kapalam'. as Annalakshmi. The kapalam's hunger was satiated but was still stuck to Siva's fingers.
Siva prayed to Vishnu. Vishnu said to siva that he shoud go to Thiru-kandiyur (Kamala-Kshetram). There he should have a dip in the Padma-teertham and pray to himself and his Consort. . Accordingly Siva went to Kandiyur. He had a dip in the Hatya-Nivarana teertham and did pooja to Vishnu and Devi. Immediatly the brahma kapalam fell off from Siva's fingers and he got free from Brahma's curse. From that day the deity is called Harasaaba vimochanar ( remover of curses ). Because Brahma's curse was removed ( kandanam in Tamil ) in that place it is called Kandiyur.
