Legend :
Sri Ranganathar temple in Srirangam is a famous one in Tamil Nadu. This being a Vaishnavaite temple is considered to be a Thirupati. This temple is very huge with seven big parapet walls and they are considered as the seven 'lokas' like Indra ,prajapathi etc above the earth.
The outermost peremeter wall is about 3070 feet in length and 2500 feet in breath. This temple has seven streets and seven pragarams. Each street has a vaishnavate name. The seventh street is called 'Chitrai veedhi'. The sixth street is called' Thiru-Vikraman' street. The fifth street is called 'Om aglangan thiru veedhi'. The fourth street is called 'Aalinadan Thiruveedhi'. The third is called' Kulasekaran Thiruveedhi'. The second and first are called 'Rajamahendran' and Sri Ranganadhar respectivly. This temple's total area is about 150 acres (about 10 km ) and has twenty one towers and each of it weighing approximately 25,000 tons. The entrance arch of this temple is 12 feet wide and the height is 24 feet. It is said that the entrence tower is the biggest one in the continent of Asia.
It took nearly 6 to 7 years to complete this tower .This is called Raja Gopuram and the height is 235 feet. The base of it is 13 feet and this tower has twelve 'Kalasams' on the top.The architectural marvel is that while coming out of the seventh street one can see all the 4 main tower-entrances.
The Legend says that after Rama had vanquished the demon Ravana he was preparing to return home. Vibishana implored the Lord to stay in Lanka itself. Rama however was insistent on returning to India. He came to Srirangam and being tired after the battle lay down to rest. But as a concession to Vibishana while lying down he was facing Lanka. The deity is in a lying pose in Srirangam temple. It is believed that Vibishana even today comes to Srirangam temple everyday to worship the Lord.
